6'1, 190 lbs, Mesa(AZ) Community College
Thomas Watkins' presence has already done Iowa State a world of good. He helped to land former junior college teammate Ernest Brown. Don't call it a package deal though, Watkins was an Honorable Mention JC All-American. He shot 48% from three point range and 51% from the floor on his way to averaging 17 points a game for the loaded Mesa(AZ) Thunderbirds. He should help the Cyclones push the tempo a bit, as he prefers that kind of game. Watkins originally graduated from South Mountain High in Phoenix, Arizona. He chose Mesa because of his longtime friend, assistant Tres Chapman. He finished his sophomore season ranked in the nation's top 40 junior college players. Watkins visited ISU with fellow signee Richard Evans, and enjoyed his visit so much that they both committed soon after. Arizona State and Arizona were the other schools recruiting Thomas the hardest. Mesa head coach Joedy Gardner says, "He shoots fundamentally sound under pressure and he's got a very good middle game." For ISU, Watkins will be somewhat of a hired gun. He will provide the outside shooting that has been missing since the departure of Dedric Willoughby. There has been talk of Watkins redshirting to even out classes, but there is no doubt that Watkins could contribute if needed.
